Letters for Creatives #7: Book marketing
Plus: Self-publishing on Amazon, the art of noticing and more
Hello, I am Celeste. Each week I write about creativity and writing. There will be case studies and interviews with writers and artists coming soon.
This week is a bit different. I am sharing with you a medley of interesting things I find this week.
The art of noticing
I really enjoyed this issue that Rob Walker wrote. Walker shows us that one way to market your book is including it in a newsletter.
He wrote about a few topics but I particularly like the section of Something to Notice. You find a number corresponding to the date for an entire month, take photos of them and keep them in a sketchbook or photo book.
My obsession with sketchbooks and notebooks developed in my college days where I had to do research and development for my fashion design projects. The obsession never went away since then.
Book marketing
This Twitter thread showed how Melanie did marketing for her book. It was such an inspiring way to do book marketing. It would be useful if I publish my poetry book one day. My eagerness to learn marketing was simply that I can market my book if it happens. But I have been having fun learning about marketing.
Self-publishing on Amazon
This podcast is mainly about the changes Medium had recently. Shaunta, Ashley, and Meg talked about how to pivot from Medium and earn money from writing.
Publishing a book on Amazon is not a new idea to me. More and more poets on Instagram publish their poetry collection on Amazon. Publishing on Amazon can earn you more money than you earn from Medium every month.
You can publish a short story that has over 2500 words, fiction or a poetry collection. Self-publishing on Amazon is probably more reliable if you want to increase your income through writing.
What does 2020 teach us?
I have been a loyal fan of Renee Amberg vlogs since 2 or 3 years ago. I really like this video of her reading the lessons her fans learn this year.
My favourites from the video
The impermanence of life.
Still learning… to rely on myself for happiness and not external influences.
Cherish the small moments, they are the big ones. (Very true!)
Don’t rush the process.
We only have this moment.
Take time for yourself. You can’t help anyone until you help yourself.
Gratitude must be greater than expectations.
Multiple streams of income are necessary.
Life is full of both wonders and wounds. We can choose which one we glance at and which one we stare into. (Stare into wonder and you will be happy like a kid.)
A poem with an interesting concept
I am going to do a shameless plug for a second. This heartbreak poem with 3 replies gets the most reads on Medium so far. Check it out if you like reading poetry.
I value your feedback, suggestions, constructive critiques, compliments, etc. If you have anything creative that you want to send me, send it to celestetsang@gmail.com
Please answer a few questions for this questionnaire to improve the newsletter. It would help me understand what you want to read about. Feel free to leave any suggestion or constructive critiques. I appreciate your time.
