Challenge #7
Rachel Nguyen on her creative process
Austin Kleon has been writing a lot on his blog and Substack. He mentioned something that he wrote in 2018.
Get Lynda Barry’s What It Is and do the exercises every day in a private notebook.
One of the reasons I started the list with Lynda Barry is that she speaks of “The Image” (learned from her teacher Marilyn Frasca) — the thing that is alive in the work. If you can learn to work with The Image, it translates to any art form.
If you like what you are reading, subscribe, share with your friends on Twitter, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Email or click the ❤️ button.
Feel free to share your ideas on Notes with me if you have the Substack app. It is like Twitter but for Substack community only.
Read something every day
Ray Bradbury suggested creatives to read a story, a poem and an essay every day to inspire them and mix different ideas together.
“I have fed my Muse on equal parts of trash and treasure,” he wrote, and that often included “comic strips, TV shows, books, magazines, newspapers, plays, and films.”
Thank you for giving us the excuse to consume trash. Sometimes you do not know if it is trash until you start consuming. Sometimes it ends up being your favourite TV shows. Comedy TV show is a great place to find inspiration for fictional characters if you are a character-driven fiction writer like me.
